REV250 Programs with the Gloucester County Library System

Gloucester County Library in Mullica Hill, NJ has received a grant from the New Jersey State Library and REV250 titled: “Where We Live: Gloucester County's Pivotal Role In America's Fight For Freedom, 1777 - 1783.

This section will include details of upcoming programs detailing colonial and Revolutionary War history in Gloucester County. Check back for updates.

Trinity Church Cemetery Tour with Ben Carlton
On Wednesday, August 20th, @ 6:30 pm, the Gloucester County Library in Mullica Hill will host a Cemetery Tour of Trinity Church in Swedesboro.

The tour will be led by local historian and author Ben Carlton. Participants will meet at Trinity Church 1208 Kings Highway Swedesboro, NJ 08085 @ 6:30 pm.

Participants of the tour will visit the grave-sites of soldiers from the American Revolution and other well-known Gloucester County residents as well as hear fascinating facts and stories about the unique role that Swedesboro played in the American Revolution.

Bennet Carlton is the author of “King of the Tories: John Hatton and the American Revolution in Swedesboro and Woolwich Township, New Jersey”. As well as several other books on the Civil War and World War II. Ben also worked at the Logan Township Branch of the Gloucester County Library and led tours for Centipede Tours of Philadelphia.

Please join us on Thursday, September 25th, for an intriguing program on Fort Mercer and the Red Bank Battlefield led by Rowan Professor, Wade Catts.

In addition to the history of the Red Bank Battlefield, Professor Catts will discuss how the remains of 15 Revolutionary War Soldiers were discovered and unearthed.

On Thursday, October 23rd, please join us for a riveting lecture by local Author & Historian, Ben Carlton who will discuss his book "King of the Tories: John Hatton and the American Revolution in Swedesboro and Woolwich Township, New Jersey

Joining Ben will be Re-enactor, Emory Dawes who will be in full Loyalist (Tory) soldier regalia.

Please join us on Thursday, November 20th, for a special visit by author Michael Gabriele who will be discussing his book "Colonial Taverns of New Jersey: Libations, Liberty and Revolution". @ 7pm.

Michael will also be discussing "The Barnsboro Inn" in Sewell which has historical significance as one of the oldest bars in New Jersey as it was established as a tavern in 1776.

Cornwallis’s Headquarters Historical Marker
The GCHS Museum is housed in the 1765 Hunter-Lawrence-Jessup House. HLJ House was added to the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places in 1972 for its significance in military history, education, and politics. In 1925, the property became the home of Gloucester County Historical Society. Today, the Museum houses more than 30,000 artifacts and historical objects are on view to the public via permanent and rotating exhibits.
