24/7 Emergency Mental Health/Suicide Prevention Hotlines

  • 911: This is the emergency number for any police, fire or medic. 
  • 988: This number routes callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (now known as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), and is now active across the United States. Compassionate, accessible care and support will be available for anyone experiencing mental health-related distress, thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crisis. People can also dial 988 if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support.
  • 1-800-273-TALK (or 8255): This is the 800 number to National Suicide Prevention Lifleline. Dialing this number is the same thing as dialing or texting 988.
  • 855-654-6735: This is the number to the NJ Suicide Prevention HopeLine, which provides support, assessment and, if needed, intervention in the most cooperative and least restrictive manner to New Jersey residents in emotional distress and suicidal crisis.
  • 888-222-2228: This is the number to the 2nd Floor Youth Helpline, a confidential and anonymous helpline for New Jersey's youth and young adults.
  • 866-267-2267: This is the number to Cop 2 Cop, a free and confidential 24-hour telephone helpline available exclusively to law enforcement officers and their families to help deal with personal or job-related stress and behavioral healthcare issues.
  • 866-838-7654: This number connects to New Jersey Vet 2 Vet, a 24 hour/7-day a week helpline coordinated by Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care. The helpline features peer counseling for Veterans, members of the Air/Army National Guard, and family members.
