Quite simply, a Makerspace can be defined as a designated area supplied with tools, ranging from the very basic to the latest cutting edge technology in which people of all ages can gather to learn, socialize, experiment and create.
A Makerspace provides opportunities to engage both young and old in creative-thinking and encourages community-based innovation and entrepreneurship in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mechanics (STEAM).
A goal for the Gloucester County Library System (GCLS) as stated in the 2013-2016 Strategic Plan was to create a makerspace, the first in Gloucester County. Establishment of a Makerspace supported the GCLS mission, which is to provide welcoming community spaces where people gather to learn, create and have fun.
